What is a Domestic Basketball Competition?
Domestic Competitions are basketball competitions organised by a local Basketball Association and held within the local area. These competitions typically include both junior and senior divisions, which are managed and run by the Association.
Junior Domestic Competition
Melton Basketball Association (MBA) Junior Domestic Competition offers team opportunities for children from Under 8 Mixed (boys and girls) to single-gender divisions in Under 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 age groups.
Thirteen affiliated Domestic Clubs manage and enter teams each season. Teams progress through grading, a regular season, and finals, culminating in a Championship for each grade.
To support player development, teams typically train weekly under the guidance of a coach, focusing on skills and drills in local facilities.
Senior Domestic Competition
The Senior Domestic Competition operates similarly to the Junior Competition but is open to older teens (15+) and adults. Unlike the Junior format, teams are not club-based but self-registered directly with Melton Basketball.
Currently, our graded Women's League runs on a Monday Evening, our Mixed League runs on a Wednesday Evening, and we have two Men's Leagues; Tuesday Nights at Caroline Springs and Sunday Nights at Cobblebank.
As of mid-2025 there are plans to intoduce another Women's League on a Sunday Afternoon in Caroline Springs, and an Over 35 Men's League on a Wednesday Night.
The Domestic Basketball Season
The Melton Basketball Association (MBA) runs two junior domestic seasons annually—Summer and Winter:
-
Summer Season: Begins in Term 4 (late September/early October) and concludes at the end of Term 1 (late March/April), with breaks during school holidays.
-
Winter Season: Runs from the start of Term 2 to the end of Term 3, also pausing for school holidays.
Senior competition season dates may vary depending on the competition day. Extended seasons run for approximately six months, while shorter formats span around three months.

Structure of the competition
Each season begins with a grading phase (2-4 weeks), where teams within the same age group compete to determine appropriate skill-based groupings, forming official grades for the season.
This is followed by the regular season (8-20 weeks), where teams compete within their grade. Game results determine ladder positions, with the top-ranked teams qualifying for finals. Teams outside the top positions conclude their season at this point.
The finals series sees the highest-ranked teams compete for the championship, concluding with a Grand Final. The structure and number of finals games may vary based on the number of teams in each grade.
